Velká Úpa – Pec pod Sněžkou – Krkonoše

The Krkonoše mountains are the most well-known, highest and most visited mountains in the Czech Republic. Sněžka mountain is the highest point in the country. Krkonoše was declared a national park in 1963 and has been on the list of UNESCO biosphere reservations since 1992.
Krkonoše is the most visited area of the Czech Republic in winter, thanks to the high quality and varied opportunities for downhill skiing and an extensive network of cross-country skiing routes. In the contrasting summer season, Krkonoše is a popular destination for hikers and cyclists with dozens of adapted and well-signed cycle routes.

  • Happy Hill – Pec pod Sněžkou (Monkey park, ski school, equipment hire, sightseeing trips, events...)
  • Sněžka cableway – Pec pod Sněžkou – climbing more than 680 m in less than half-an-hour

Tips for trips – In and around Pec pod Sněžkou

  • Sněžka – a number of hiking, cross-country skiing and cycle routes lead to the summit. The most common starting point is Pec pod Sněžkou, which is also where the cableway cable cars begin (with a mid-point station at Růžová hora). You can take short trips around Sněžka peak or go back to Pec pod Sněžkou or to Špindlerův Mlýn.
  • Obří Důl – A glacier-formed valley with moraines, rock-basins (Úpská jáma, Velká and Malá Studniční jáma), ravines, waterfalls, avalanche-prone slopes and enclosed meadows, rare flowers and insects. Krakonošová zahrádka is a particularly valuable area in terms of biodiversity.
Kovárna mine opening – a mysterious cave in Obří Důl leads you inside the mountain of Sněžka – 250 m of mines where you can have a look at functional historic mining equipment and you can try out for yourself how miners in the Middle Ages worked.
  • Luční bouda – take a trip to the largest and oldest mountain chalet in Krkonoše, by cross-country skiing in winter or by foot in summer. Luční bouda lies at an impressive altitude of 1 410 m and its history reaches back more than 300 years. Lies in one of the most valuable parts of the Krkonoše national park.
  • Malá Úpa – peaceful and romantic village with a wooden mountain church where you will feel like you have reached the edge of the world.
  • Janské Lázně – a fantastic position at the foot of the Černá hora mountain. Indulge yourself with a bath and massage. There is also a pool and cable railway. There is a high-quality ski centre and cross-country ski route available in winter. In summer, you can take the cable railway to the top of Černá hora and look-out tower or follow the walking and cycling routes.
  • Look-out tower at Hnědý vrch – the highest look-out tower in Krkonoše, it measures almost 31 metres. A cable car leads right up to the tower from Pec pod Sněžkou. There is a wonderful view of the main Krkonoše ridge from the look-out tower.
  • Rýchory Nature Trail – with 10 stop-offs, this trail goes through the most valuable part of Krkonoše National Park (KRNAP) – I and II zones. The route goes along marked hiking trails and leads from the Maxovka viewing point with a section leading to the Rýchory spring towards the crossroads from Kutná to Dvorský les and returning above Sněžné Domky.
  • Vlčí jáma walking route – named after the perfectly formed Vlčí jáma (Wolf pit) rock basin, this walk presents you with an overview of the natural, built and historic sites of interest in the west of the mountain town of Pec pod Sněžkou.
  • The Ice-Age Inheritance, or the cross-border nature trail – goes through the I zone of KRNAP and KPN, the most valuable region of Krkonoše. The trail is approx 9 km long and it can be joined at any point.
